Rhinanthus spp.
Helpful grass parasitic plant with yellow lipped flowers and rattling seedpods.
The rattlesnake serves as a food source for insects such as bumblebees, bees and butterflies and obtains its nutrients from the roots of grasses, which it thereby weakens. The plants prefer lean soils that are not too dry. In most German states, the species is considered endangered, as larger populations are now only found in nature reserves. For self-seeding, the annual plants, which are up to 50 cm high, must have the opportunity to flower. For sowing in existing meadows, small open patches of soil should be created first. Since rattlehead is a cold germinator, sowing should be done in autumn or early spring.
